we are back again with russian artist, module one. at just 22 years-old he is already had a stack of releases including an ambient album on detroit underground. * hometown* was written in the depths of russia in a place called novocherkassk, whose industrial cityscapes made a great impact on the overall sound of the album. most of the tracks were written in a few takes. most notably, the track * innermost self* is a dedication to module ones grandma who passed away a short time ago. due to a tragic sequence of events, he was unable to see her before she fell into a coma. the track is overloaded with tension and fear as well as stark anxiety. vinyl tastes better…

2015 brought the trilogy of the dancer to ressort. now the labels core artists each remix their tracks in circles. while all of them aim for the dancefloor, ressorts core artists could not sound more diverse. ekserd and border one aim for the raw, the groovy and the pure while array access and glos lose themselves more and more in sound design and dreaminess. since the many aspects of art and music form a cycle of ying and yang, each artist shows the other an interpretation of what he might have missed before. be it a complete stomper or a light absorbing epos, a deep and groovy house and techno hybrid or a journey into the depths of space every artist made one of the well known tracks released on previous eps his own. it is a very colourful package that bares every moment the label tried to cover in it s series before.

it was only a matter of time before the prolific electro stalwart scape one aka kurt baggaley made an appearance on cpu. scape ones penchant for sci-fi is reflected in recombination an electronic adventure through space time, stopping briefly for an atomic war. kurts vast experience and collection of analogue synthesizers can be heard to full effect with crushing bass, bubbling leads and arpeggiated sweeps throughout. strong artistic influences on the ep from john foxx, vangelis to autechre (incunabula-esque). all in all a cocktail for the perfect electro cut.

colors, the east-london party collective has been on a roll as of late, with a spate of successful events that have taken them across europe to berlin, istanbul and barcelona to name a few countries. as the name suggests, each event draws inspiration from the colour spectrum, with guests encouraged to dress up in a different chosen shade each night to get down to a soundtrack influenced by deep house, funk, disco and techno.

the next bleep release comes in the form of spaces debut ep, one. showcasing a wide range of styles and production talent, the ep opens with the frantic rush of beats and hushed voices of *apologies* before a reese-like bassline slices through the mix, coming across like a darkside snd remix. next up is *outside in* bridging the gap between edmx style electro-funk & gescom-style glitch. on the flip we are presented with *lever*, a broken techno track of the highest calibre, chopped snares and a off-kilter acid line whipped together to devastating effect while the ep’s coda, *in wait* combines a kaleidoscope of beats transported through an ambient techno mainframe before fading into oblivion. sounding like no other, this new artist makes his mark with clean rhythmic programming set against dirty compressed textures. the first in a series of releases, expect to hear a lot more from spaces. the vinyl edition is limited to 300 copies worldwide.

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!
